A video recording by the brother of a dowry victim put a 25-year-old man behind bars for his wife’s murder. He had told the police it was a case of suicide.
Initially, police booked the man for dowry death but later victim’s brother did a sting operation in which the man, identified as Pawan Kumar, confessed that he had killed his wife Sonia (21). She was found hanging on Monday night in her Ambedkar Nagar house in southeast Delhi.
“We are scanning the footage provided by Sonia’s brother. In the video recording Pawan has confessed that he strangulated his wife and then tied her body with a rope to make it look like a suicide. Pawan has been arrested,” said a senior police officer requesting anonymity.
Police haven’t recovered any suicide note from the spot. The body has been sent for the post-mortem examination and police are waiting for the report to confirm whether it was a murder or suicide.
“Confession in front of a camera is not evidence and we have to collect more proof to establish sequence of events. Thus post-mortem report is important for the investigation,” the officer added.
Police said the incident was reported around 8.30pm on Monday and victim’s brother submitted the footage on Tuesday afternoon.
“Sonia was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside her room by her family members. She was declared brought dead at Aiims,” the officer further said.
An SDM probe has also been ordered into the incident as Sonia’s family alleged that she was continuously harassed by her husband and in-laws.
Sonia’s parents-in-law lived on the ground floor of their residence while she lived with Pawan on the first floor. Pawan is doing a computer course from a private institute and both got married in May this year. A case has been registered at Ambedkar Nagar police station and further investigations are on.
