The body of a 40-year-old driver, who had been missing for the past two days, was fished out by divers from the Yamuna River on Thursday evening.

Yaqoob’s killers had tied heavy stones to his body and dumped it in the river near south Delhi’s Jamia to keep it from floating. He had gone to meet a friend but did not return home.

“After a missing complaint was filed by his family, we began efforts to trace him using his cell phone number. It came to light that he was last seen near the Yamuna area,” a senior officer said.

Acting on information from local residents, the police called in professional divers to search for the body in the river.

“On Thursday evening, the divers managed to find the body. The killers had tied heavy stones with the body to make sure it does not float. The family members have identified the body,” the officer further said.

The body has been sent for post-mortem. “It has been confirmed that he was murdered but we are not sure about the motive. There are no external injuries and he was probably strangulated before being dumped in river,” the officer added.

The police have arrested Shiv Kumar, 50, and Rakesh, 38, in connection with the murder. They have reportedly admitted their hand in Yaqoob’s death.
