Mute UPA helps Sangh

Hindutva’s lunatic fringe is at work again, targeting Christians and Muslims across States where the BJP is in power. Its agenda obviously is to foment communal tensions in the run-up to elections to the Lok Sabha and five state assemblies.

As fundamentalism of one hue feeds on the other, it’s no coincidence the Bajrang Dal-VHP-RSS rogues went around attacking churches and terrorizing Muslims in Karnataka, Gujarat and Orissa in the wake of the serial blasts in Jaipur and Ahmedabad. The proof of it lies in detailed references to their violent actions in the so-called Indian Mujahideen’s email claiming the dastardly Delhi bombings. “We ask you, why the Sangh terror on minorities including the Muslims, Dalits and Christians is rarely noticed?” the shadowy outfit asked in justification of its wanton killings.

Scared obviously of a majority backlash, the Centre sat on its hands even as social activists and NGOs sent out distress messages flagging the hydra-headed Sangh’s nefarious designs. National Integration Council member Shabnam Hashmi alerted the UPA leadership days in advance about Karnataka. But her pleadings were to no avail.

“The Centre’s advisory to the errant states is a case of too little happening too late. They could have prevented the onslaught,” said Hashmi. In fact, the UPA’s inertia helped the Sangh’s storm troopers mount attacks even in cantonment areas — as was the case in poll-bound Madhya Pradesh.

In Udupi and Mangalore, the marauding mobs were joined by elements scared out of Mumbai by the BJP’s brazenly chauvinistic ally, the Shiv Sena. The charge made by a senior Congressman was at once proof of his party’s inability to retain what could have been its captive constituency against the saffron offensive.

“They had promised to follow the Narendra Modi model (of development) in Karnataka. Now we know what they actually meant,” remarked AICC general secretary B K Hariprasad. For his part, the Gujarat CM dismissed the Centre’s warnings as an attempt to deflect attention from countrywide anger against terrorism.

Quite clearly, the lowly Hindutva war is in concert with the bloodbath in the name of Islam. And the UPA a mute spectator on the sidelines!
