Kunti Devi, the mother of Nithari convict Surinder Koli, has questioned the “haste” in hanging her son, saying Koli’s death will only help clear the name of Moninder Singh Pandher in the serial killings.

Speaking to Hindustan Times from her village at Mangrukhal in Uttarakhand, Koli’s mother said, “I still maintain that my son is innocent. Pandher cannot go free while my son is being made a scapegoat. Either both should be hanged or both should be freed.”

“Today, officials arrived and asked me to go to Meerut to meet my son between September 7 and September 12. What difference will it make. They will hang my son anyways,” she said.

The parents of Nithari victims also raised doubts over Koli’s execution.

Koli has been sentenced to death for the murder of Rimpa Halder — one of the several cases in which he had been either convicted or stands accused.

The victims’ families claim Koli’s hanging at this stage would deny them justice in the 15 other equally heinous cases against Koli.

“We fail to understand the haste in execution of the death sentence to Surinder Koli. Only Pandher will benefit from his hanging. The CBI has helped Pandher by not making him an accused and not invoking serious charges against him,” alleged Pappu Lal, father of one of the victims.

Rimpa’s father Anil Halder alleged that Koli’s hanging would be the victory of the “rich and influential” Pandher.

“I still hope God will punish Pandher too, who is the real culprit in our eyes,” said Halder. The families demanded that Koli’s hanging should be stayed till all cases are settled.

“Since Pandher has got bail and expected to be released from jail soon, the CBI now hastily want to hang Koli,” said Durga Prasad, another victim’s parent.

“Koli may help nail Pandher,” said SC Mishra, social worker who is helping some of victims’ families.
