A 37-year-old Myanmarese refugee has alleged that she was raped inside Kalawati Saran hospital in central Delhi.

“Around 11 pm, my daughter, who is admitted in the hospital, was thirsty and so I went to fetch water for her. A man who was wearing a red shirt and blue denims overpowered me, dragged me to a desolate place on the hospital premises and raped me ,” the woman, who speaks only Burmese, said in her complaint.

Though the incident took place on June 6, the woman, a mother of five did not complain to the police. She informed an NGO last week and subsequently a case was registered at the Mandir Marg police station, the police said.

Police said the woman did not lodge a complaint earlier as she did not speak the local language. “We had come to Delhi one-and-a-half years ago, the victim’s husband said. They live in a UN refugee camp in west Delhi with their children.

“The woman got in touch with an NGO and approached us a month after the incident. We have registered a case and are investigating the case,” said Shankar Dash, DCP (New Delhi).

GK Sharma, medical superintendent of Lady Hardinge Medical Hospital, denied knowledge of the incident.
