To avoid the rush in Delhi nursery schools, parent Rajan Sharma, a resident of Vivek Vihar in east Delhi, applied to Delhi Public School in Indirapuram.

Sharma felt he had more chances of getting his child admitted there than in any Delhi school. But getting through a school in the NCR may not be such a smooth ride after all.

Since the Ganguly Committee recommendations are not applicable to the NCR, the schools are free to question the child and the parent as per their criteria.

“Did you have a love marriage? Did you run away from home to get married?” These were some of the questions Paramjeet Kaur Anand (name changed) had to face during an interaction in one of the schools in Gurgaon as part of the ongoing nursery admissions.

“I fail to understand what bearing it has on my child’s admission,” said Anand whose daughter has not been able to secure admission in the school of her choice.

“While they were interviewing me they took my daughter to a separate room and asked her questions.” But what is more surprising is Anand admitting, “It’s humiliating to answer such questions but as a parent one has to do this else the child will suffer. I will try for these schools next year again since they are the best in town.”

Anand is not alone as many other parents have faced such problems. “I am so relieved, this is like a Diwali gift for me,” said Rupali Pandey (name changed) whose daughter has got admitted to nursery in the school of her choice in Gurgaon.
Some are just thankful their ordeal is over.

“We were very tense. It was as good as a job interview. I am happy it’s finally over,” said Shobha Rai (name changed).
