Delhiites continued to shiver under extreme cold conditions on Monday. But people living in the national capital region (NCR) were worse off.

While Gurgaon shivered at a minimum of 0.6 degrees, Hindon saw sub-zero temperatures for the second day in a row at -0.1 degrees. Faridabad saw a low of 2.2 degrees.

The minimum temperature in Delhi was 2.4 degrees Celsius, five degrees below normal while the maximum was recorded at 13.4 degrees, seven degrees below normal.

At Lodhi Road, however, the minimum temperature was 1.2 degrees.

The minimum temperatures in Noida and Indirapuram were slightly higher at 3.6 and 3.2 degrees, respectively.

The low temperature in Delhi was accompanied by dense fog that led to the cancellation of 18 trains and delay in 15 flights.

"Even though the sun was out, cold winds did not bring any relief. This is among the worst cold spells that I remember in many years. The temperature would drop drastically earlier as well but would not remain so low consistently," said Meena Rawat, 70, a resident of Gulmohar Park.

The Delhi education department had directed all schools to remain closed till January 14.

"It is a great relief for children as they have to go to school early in the morning," said Ishan Gupta, a businessman who lives in Rajouri Garden.

The Met department has forecast respite from cold after Wednesday. However, similar weather is expected on Tuesday.

"The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to remain around 13 and three degrees Celsius, respectively," said a met official.
