With just 15 days into the plantation season, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has already achieved half the target of its plantation drive and planted 1.15 lakh saplings.

The feat was achieved on Sunday, after spiritual group Brahma Kumaris, contributed towards the council’s plantation drive by planting over 1,000 saplings around Talkatora Garden and Shankar Road.

“This is not an isolated effort. We have also received great support from the students in our schools, NGOs and resident welfare associations (RWAs). On Saturday, the students of all the schools in our area planted over 2,000 saplings in and around their schools. The resident and market associations have also jointly planted over 5,000 saplings,” said NDMC chairman Naresh Kumar.

Senior NDMC officials said that in the beginning of the plantation season the council had set a target of planting 2 lakh saplings, but they will continue the drive throughout the plantation season, which continues till October.

On Saturday, Kumar also marked the birth anniversary of Shaheed Chandra Shekhar Azad by planting a Rudraksha tree at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Palace.

Last year, the civic body had planted almost double the target of 1.5lakh saplings, out of which 20,000 were of big trees.
