Parking woes of visitors to Khan Market are on their way out with the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) expecting to get land for the construction of a multi-level parking lot in the next 30-45 days.
Though it will be a couple of years before the parking area becomes functional, NDMC has almost finished clearing the plot of illegal encroachments that were delaying the project.
Khan Market traders had been demanding a multi-level parking lot for a long time keeping in mind the difficulties shoppers faced in finding a place to park their vehicles. Several shoppers would end up parking their cars on the main road, leading to congestion.
The project was getting delayed because of the delay in transfer of land from the ministry of urban development's land and development office (L&DO) to the civic body. Sources said the office had agreed to give land on the condition that NDMC would remove encroachments from the plot.
"In the last few months, the NDMC was busy serving notices to shops that had encroached upon land at Amrita Shergill Marg. Some of the shops even went to court but we have almost finished solving the issues," said an NDMC official.
Officials said though the plot will be transferred soon, the actual construction of the parking lot will take a few years. NDMC will have to outsource the work of building the parking lot on the lines of Sarojini Nagar and BKS Marg multi-level parking.
"The two multi-level parking with NDMC were constructed on BoT basis. The same approach will be taken with regards to Khan Market," said a senior official of NDMC.
