A 10-year-old girl was battered to death and her body dumped in a garbage bin, allegedly by her neighbour when she resisted his bid to rape her at her house in south Delhi’s Pul Prahladpur on Saturday night.
According to police, the victim’s body was discovered late in the night from the garbage bin by her elder brother and other neighbours. They had earlier found blood stains inside and outside his home in the slums of Railway Colony and launched a frantic search.
The police have registered a case of murder at the Pul Prahladpur police station. Investigation into the case suggested the role of the victim’s neighbour, Gopal (who goes by a single name), a father of three children, who was untraceable ever since the girl went missing from her house in the evening.
Gopal was later arrested from the Tughlaqabad railway station. During interrogation, Gopal confessed that he hit the girl on her head with a bread roller when she resisted his attempt to rape her. The police are waiting for the girl’s autopsy report to confirm if she was raped.
“On Saturday evening, Gopal reached home early and consumed alcohol with his friend. He later went to the victim’s house on the pretext of watching television and allegedly tried to rape her. When she resisted, Gopal hit the girl on her head with the bread roller and smashed her head against the wall. Later, he dragged her to the garbage bin and battered her to death with a stone. He hid the body in the garbage bin and fled,” said a senior police officer.
The girl, the officer said, had come to Delhi for treatment around 45 days ago and was staying with her brother, who is a labourer. On Saturday morning, her brother and Gopal left for work at around 7 am. The girl’s brother came home around 7pm and found her missing.
“He found blood spots inside as well as outside his house. He found a piece of his sister’s cloth near the garbage bin. He raised an alarm after which some neighbours helped him to find her body,” the officer said.
