An 18-year-old girl was allegedly raped by one of her neighbours in north Delhi's Timarpur area on Tuesday, police said.
"The accused has been identified as 30-year-old Vijay Kumar, who is the victim's next-door neighbour. He was arrested on Wednesday," said a senior police officer investigating the incident.
According to police, the incident occurred when the victim's mother had gone to a nearby market and her father was out of town. "Vijay Kumar had gone out of town for some time and had left the keys to his house with the victim's mother, his neighbour. When he returned on Tuesday evening and went to her house to get his keys, he realised that no one was home. He took advantage of the opportunity and barged inside," the officer said.
Police said the accused entered the house and forced himself on the victim after locking the main door.
"He physically assaulted her before raping her and threatened her with dire consequences if she told anyone about the incident. However, the incident was too much for the victim to cope with and she confided in her mother when she returned. Her mother approached the police," said the officer. Police said the girl was taken to a nearby hospital where medical examination confirmed sexual assault.
"Vijay had fled immediately after the incident but we managed to track him down after conducting raids," the officer added.
