With the existing BRT corridor under the court's scanner, the Delhi government has put its plan to build 15 more corridors on hold, at least for the time being.
Senior Delhi government officials said they are closely monitoring the court's directive and the ongoing study on the 5.8 kilometre Ambedkar Nagar-Moolchand Hospital stretch and will take a decision on the proposed BRT corridors only after the air on the fate of the existing corridor is cleared."The finance department has also refused to clear the appointment of consultants to carry out feasibility study on eight BRT corridors proposed to be built by the public works department," a Delhi government official said, requesting anonymity.
The PWD had called tenders and later shortlisted consultants to prepare a feasibility report for seven BRT corridors, measuring about 106 kilometres, earlier this year. Officials said the feasibility study for each corridor is likely to cost the government about Rs 2 crore each.
"The finance department thinks it will be a waste of money if the court comes out with any adverse observation on BRT. It will require intervention from no less than chief minister Sheila Dikshit herself to push the project," a government official said.
PWD officials, however, said it is up to the government if it really wants BRT corridor to be built.
"BRT is a good concept but it is a policy decision which the government has to take. We will soon make a presentation to the chief minister in this regard," PWD principal secretary Nutan Guha Biswas said.
In its recent study on multi-modal transport options, RITES had suggested 15 BRT corridors of 233.5 kilometre length for Delhi to streamline its public transport system. The Delhi government had assigned eight BRT corridors to Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS), the agency that built and operated the existing BRT corridor, and gave the remaining seven to the PWD.
The government later asked DIMTS not to carry out any work on eight proposed corridors for some time and has now put the appointment of consultants for seven PWD's corridors on hold.
