There is good news for shoppers taking the Metro to Connaught Place.

In a bid to decongest Rajiv Chowk Metro station, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has decided to make the underground line connecting Mandi House and Central Secretariat operational as early as possible.

Therefore, it has floated tenders even before Phase 3 has been officially awarded to the corporation. According to officials, the tender was floated in November and will be opened on December 10. Immediately after that construction for the stretch will start. The project cost is R450 crore.

"This is actually part of the proposed 7-km-long stretch between Central Secretariat and Lal Quila. This is one of the vital lines of the proposed Phase 3. But we have decided to at least make the 3.2-km stretch between Central Secretariat and Mandi House operational at the earliest. This line will give us a huge relief from the recurrent trouble we are facing due to regular congestion at Rajiv Chowk Metro station," said Kumar Keshav, director (projects), DMRC.

Two stations will be constructed at Janpath and Mandi House. The existing station at Mandi House is meant for broad gauge trains and the new station will handle standard gauge trains.

Sources said that once Phase 3 is officially assigned to DMRC, it would invite tenders for the stretch that would connect Mandi House and Lal Quila with Metro stations at ITO, Dilli Gate, Daryaganj and Lal Quila. Once the stretch between Central Secretariat and Mandi House is operational, people coming from Badarpur will not have to change at Rajiv Chowk to take Line 3 for Noida or Anand Vihar. They can directly go through Mandi House, said Anuj Dayal, DMRC spokesperson.

"We will try and finish construction of the stretch within two years and make the line operational. This line will be a huge breather to us, as pressure on Rajiv Chowk will drastically reduce," he added.

According to the tender document, the line has to be ready within three years.
