A 23-year-old woman, who gave birth to a girl 10 days ago, lost vision in one eye after being allegedly attacked by her husband and in-laws for dowry.
The incident was reported from Najafgarh in Southwest Delhi on Friday.
The victim has been identified as Geeta and hails from Haryana.
According to the police, Geeta's husband Vinod (28) a property dealer and her in-laws were allegedly demanding Rs 1 lakh after she gave birth to a girl child.
“Geeta had been refusing to meet their dowry demands. This led to a fight and she was beaten up. One of her eyes was badly injured after she was attacked by a sharp-edged weapon during the beating,” said a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity.
The police said Geeta has lost vision in the eye. Geeta is undergoing treatment at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.
The police said initially a case of disrupting peace was registered but later the case was transferred to the Crime Against Women's Cell after the details in the case came out.
Her family alleged that there were two earlier attempts to kill her by in-laws after she failed to meet their dowry demands.
On the first occasion, Geeta’s family alleged, her in-laws tried to hang her but she was somehow rescued.
On that occasion, her family claimed they paid R 20,000 to her in-laws to save Geeta from the harassment.
After sometime, the family alleged, the in-laws attempted to set Geeta on fire. This time around, Geeta's family paid her in-laws R 50,000.
"This time, Vinod threatened to divorce her. But she did not budge and refused to ask her family for more money. This led to the beating her up in which she lost one of her eyes,” added the officer.
The police said the couple got married two years ago. No one has been arrested in the case so far, the police added.
