A new initiative that will go a long way in ensuring that proper nutrition reaches India’s high number of malnourished children has finally got the government nod.

According to government data every second child under the age of three is malnourished in India, a reflection of how poorly various schemes launched over the years to tackle the issue have fared.

In yet another effort to stem child malnutrition, the Centre’s Expenditure Finance Committee recently cleared the Rs 1161 crore multi-sectoral nutrition plan. It will be launched during 2013 - 14 in 100 districts that have the worst maternal and child health track record. In the second phase it will be scaled up to include 100 more districts.

The plan was also being pushed by the PM’s National Council on India’s nutrition challenges. As part of the initiative, nutrition councils will be set up at the state and district level which will focus on incorporating pro-nutrition elements in different government schemes and ensure they reach the beneficiaries.

Also multi sectoral programs involving different ministries such as women & child development, health, panchayati raj and tribal affairs will be introduced to curb maternal and child nutrition.
