New witness in Soumya case

Delhi Police have got an eyewitness in the Soumya Vishwanathan murder case.

Abhishek Kumar, brother-in-law of Amit Kumar Shukla, one of the accused, has told police the accused had parked the Wagon R car used in the TV journalist’s murder outside his residence in Vasant Kunj.

Kumar, who runs a cyber café near Vasant Kunj, said the accused had repaired the car before parking it. Amit had fled to Mumbai after Soumya’s murder.

“Kumar told us that when he came to know about Soumya’s murder, he got suspicious about the car and asked Amit to take away the vehicle. Then Ravi Kapoor, the alleged leader of the gang, went to the house and brought it away,” said a senior police officer. Kumar recorded his statement before a magistrate on Monday. The car was later sold by the accused and is yet to be recovered. Apart from Amit and Kapoor, the other accused involved in the case is Baljit Malik alias Poppy.

Police said that early last September 30, the trio had chased Soumya to rob her. They crashed into her car from behind, overtook her and shot her dead. “There were some scratches on the car which they repaired at a garage,” said the officer. “We would use Kumar’s statement as circumstantial evidence against the accused.”
