A 39-year-old woman died in mysterious circumstances at her in-laws' rented house in east Delhi's Laxmi Nagar on Wednesday night. She was married just 12 days ago.
The woman, identified as Sunita, was found hanging from a ceiling fan around 10.30 pm, police said.
Her family members alleged her husband, Rakesh Sharma, 37, and her in-laws killed her for dowry.
However, her in-laws claimed she committed suicide.
The police registered a case at the Shakarpur police station on a complaint lodged by Sunita's father Munshi Ram against her husband and in-laws. An SDM inquiry had been ordered into the matter, said a police officer.
Sunita, the officer said, was married to Sharma on April 13 at the latter's village in Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh. After marriage, the couple shifted to their rented accommodation in Guru Ram Das Nagar in Laxmi Nagar.
“Sunita's father told us that her in-laws, especially her sister-in-law, were pressuring her for dowry. The father claimed that on Tuesday, he had given R1.5 lakh to her in-laws.
“Around 11 pm on Wednesday, Sunita's husband called him to inform that Sunita had hanged herself from a ceiling fan,” said a police officer.
Preliminary investigation, the officer said, revealed the couple had an argument when Sharma returned home after consuming liquor. Sharma works with a private company.
