Taking cognizance of media reports on the alleged rape and murder of a teenage girl by policemen in the Lakhipur district of Uttar Pradesh, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Sunday issued notice to the state.
The commission set up its investigation team to conduct an inquiry into the incident. A detailed report has been sought from the state director general of police within four weeks. “If the contents of the media reports are true, then it's a serious issue of human rights violation,” said NHRC spokesperson.
The 14-year-old’s body was found hanging from a tree on the station premises.
Eleven police personnel posted at the police station have reportedly been suspended following protest by locals demanding action against the guilty police officials.
