The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the probe in bombings at Hyderabad’s Mecca Masjid (2007) and outside a Malegaon mosque (2006). But there are complications in the Centre transferring the probe into the murder of RSS activist Sunil Joshi in Madhya Pradesh.
Joshi was an accused in Samjhauta Express blast and three other cases. Investigators believe his murder was linked to his role in these cases.
“Sunil Joshi is not a case to be transferred. We’ve to apply to the court under a different section of the Act. And I do think we will apply to the court,” home minister P Chidambaram announced on Friday.
The home ministry had earlier asked the law ministry for its opinion on the transfer of Sunil Joshi murder case in the wake of absence of a nod from the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh. The local police has recently chargesheeted some people, including Sadhvi Pragya Thakur, an accused in the Malegaon 2008 case, in connection with Joshi’s murder.
The home minister said the Centre had issued notifications on March 22 to entrust the NIA with investigating the Malegaon Bomb blast case (8 September 2006) and the Mecca Masjid case, Hyderabad(11 October 2007). Both cases were being investigation by the CBI.
