Nearly 1 lakh students of Delhi University’s (DU) School of Open Learning (SOL) may have to give up their hopes of taking up a masters course this year. Shaswati Das reports.

Nearly 1 lakh students of Delhi University’s (DU) School of Open Learning (SOL) may have to give up their hopes of taking up a masters course this year. There has been no final word on when they are going to get their final year marksheets. Many of them might also have to forego their provisional admissions for want of the permanent mark sheet.

“Quite a few of us have applied for masters courses. I have cleared the entrance at DU’s law faculty and I’ve secured provisional admission till August 31, after which it will be cancelled if the final year marks are not submitted. Since we don’t have our final year marks, we’re stuck” said Rishab Oswal, a student of SOL.

Officials at SOL said that even though students were facing inconvenience, it was not the institute’s responsibility to keep tabs on their marks.

“We understand that students are worried but are there is nothing we can do since the examination branch is handling the issue,” said HC Pokhriyal, executive director, SOL.

However, DU officials have passed the buck on to the SOL claiming that the institute was aware of the delay and ought to have informed the students in advance. “It will take more than a month for the results to come out since the SOL exams ended only in June. This had happened last year as well and SOL’s authorities were always in the know,” said a senior DU official, requesting anonymity.

“SOL caters to almost 3 lakh students and it is a Herculean task to get the limited teaching staff to check and evaluate papers. This is why their results take longer,” the official added.
