There is no move to allow mining of bauxite in Niyamgiri hills in Orissa for Vedanta’s aluminum factory, the environment ministry officials said on Saturday.

Environment minister Jairam Ramesh had quashed forest clearance for mining in Niyamgiri Hill and there is no move to revoke it.

“The environment clearance for Niyamgiri is inoperable today because of the absence of forest clearance,” a ministry official said. Only when the ministry revokes the forest clearance mining in Niyamgiri can be allowed.

The National Environment Appellate Authority (NEAA) had asked the ministry’s Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) to examine whether the environment clearance given to Orissa Mining Corporation was as per norms or not.

An EAC’s sub committee, which examined the approval, said it was as per norms. The EAC had accepted the recommendation of its committee and has forwarded it to the ministry.

The ministry officials said the EAC’s recommendations were under examination and the government will submit a report to National Green Tribunal, which could be examining the issue after disbanding of NEAA.
