The installation of gates and structures ob-structing the movement of people or vehicles has been banned this festive season.
Authorities may also commence criminal proceedings against violators, sources in Delhi police said.
"Special checks will be conducted till Diwali in the second week of November," said a senior police officer.
The police have imposed the ban, which was planned in a meeting on Friday, in an effort to ensure that the flow of traffic is not hindered.
Rampant commercialisation of festivities has led communities to erect bamboo and wooden structures at entrance points. These structures often sport welcome messages and logos of advertisers. "The structures are dangerous for road users and can be obstacles in case of crisis," said the officer.
"We may register criminal cases in case of violations," said another senior officer said.
