Most of the parking projects were supposed to be completed in 2010, so that they could be made operational by the Commonwealth Games. Once completed, the seven parking projects would be able to accommodate more than 17,000 cars at one time.
The seven parking projects that are located at Karol Bagh, Qutab Road, Hamilton Road, Rani Bagh, Lakkar Mandi, Padam Singh Road and Karam Pura have been stuck due to problems related to tender and involvement of too many agencies.
"Land has to be transferred to North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) by the Railways as well as the Tis Hazari bar association but it hasn't happened despite several meetings," said Mahender Nagpal, Leader of the House, NDMC.
The parking projects that have been delayed due to this are at Qutab Road and Hamilton Road. The project at Qutab Road, near the New Delhi Railway Station, will be able to accommodate 13,000 cars once completed.
Only one parking project, at Kamla Nagar Market near Delhi University, is witnessing construction work. The project is expected to be completed by October this year after which the 828 car capacity parking will start functioning.
NDMC councillors on Tuesday raised the issue of car parking and said even normal multi-level parking are taking a long time to finish, leading to hurdles in de-congesting markets and localities.
