North MCD to build more parking lots
Despite its inability to complete at least seven parking sites on which work has been going on for the last four years, the North MCD on Monday announced the plan to build five more parking lots in 2013.
It seems like a case of old habits dying hard.
After the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) announced projects that never saw the light of the day, the north corporation too seems to be heading that way.
Despite its inability to complete at least seven parking sites on which work has been going on for the last four years, the North MCD on Monday announced the plan to build five more parking lots in 2013.
The new sites are located at Shastri Park, Sant Nagar, Padam Singh Road, Qutub Road and Hamilton Road. Ravinder Gupta, the chairman of the works committee, said the new parking sites will add space for nearly 2000 new cars.
"The projects will be built on BOT basis so the corporation does not need to spend any money on them," he said.
Gupta said that two more automated parking lots at Karampura and Kirti Nagar are also being planned. The two projects are expected to ease congestion in Karol Bagh, one of the biggest commercial districts of north Delhi.
The announcement comes at a time when parking projects are stuck at Parade Ground, Model Town, Karol Bagh and an automated multi level parking at Kamla Nagar. Most of the projects were announced about four years ago.
"The work on all these sites have picked up speed. The Kamla Nagar project will be opened shortly. In total, north Delhi will have a lot of additional space for parking next year," he said.
The works committee also announced six new pedestrian bridges — Rampura, Nangloi, Roashnara Bagh, Mangolpuri, Narela-Lampur and Narela-Mundka.
