In view of high instances of sexual crimes in the country, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation has planned to conduct special workshops for its students and teachers.

Officials said the aim of these classes is to encourage children to report cases of harassment that many children usually hide out of shame and fear.

On Tuesday, Mayor Mira Aggarwal and leader of the House Mahendra Nagpal met NGO Plan India to talk about the NGO's initiative 'Chuppi Todo' (Break the silence) that could be implemented in its schools where 4.25 lakh children study in primary schools.

According to the plan, the NGO will first sensitise the teachers of municipal schools who will further impart the lessons to their students through videos, street theatres and literature. A representative of the NGO will be present at these sessions to guide the teacher.

“The NGO gave us a demonstration of their awareness campaigns and a video on sexual harassment and how people can cope with such incidents. We will be distributing these CDs among our councillors as well," said Nagpal.

He added that sexual harassment workshops are needed in schools as such cases are not just restricted to grown up women. "We will be sensitising the teachers and students about sexual harassment that remains under-reported because of the stigma attached to it. Awareness is the only way to contain the menace," he added.

Neelima Pandey, member of Plan India, said they will also be communicating with the parents of school children as they too need sensitisation.

“Chuppi Todo is an initiative to communicate to children the difference between a ‘good touch’ and ‘bad touch’ and how in instances of 'bad touch' they should report it to someone in the family whom they trust,” she added.
