Northern Railways promises cleaner railway stations

delhi Updated: Aug 01, 2009 22:57 IST

Faced with accusations of doing little to improve the conditions in railway stations, Northern Railway on Saturday assured passengers that they would soon see much cleaner platforms and more porters.

"Changes will definitely be visible shortly," said General Manager of the zone Vivek Sahai after attending a meeting with about 85 station managers in New Delhi.

Sahai said several measures are being initiated to spruce up the stations in keeping with the directives of Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee, who has also sought improvement in basic passenger amenities.

He said managers of both big and small stations under Northern Railway would be provided funds to execute work relating to cleanliness and providing basic amenities immediately without waiting for the zone's approval.

Station managers of A class stations like New Delhi, Old Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin will be given Rs 10,000 each while station managers of B class stations will be given Rs 5000. Similarly, station managers of stations falling under other classes will be given Rs 2,000 for completing development work without delay, he said.
