A city court has ordered the secretary of Delhi Election Commission to appear before it as a witness in a case related to the election of former mayor of Delhi Farhad Suri in 2007.

The court was hearing a complaint on unauthorised shifting of voters from one ward to another during the Municipal Elections 2007.

Petitioner Nisar Ahmed has alleged that Suri representing ward number 156 illegally made voters of ward number 154 to vote in ward number 156.

The irregularity in the voting process allegedly led to Suri’s victory from ward number 156.

Pulling up the State Election Commission, Additional District Judge Kamini Lau said: “Secretary of State Election Commission shall appear before this court for assistance and produce before this court all relevant notifications regarding electoral rolls of ward no. 153, 154 and 156.”

The court has also sought immediate clarification from the secretary on election booth number 72 of ward 154 and showing its voters in ward number 156.

The court also observed that during arguments, reference was made to some draft notification dated 5 February 2007 by the returning officer in his written station and it was incidentally not on record.

“Court notice is directed to be issued to the Secretary, State Election Commission, and for his examination as court witness on the next date,” said the judge.
