In a city where on an average five people die in road accidents every day, Delhi Police have finally decided to open a special branch just to investigate such cases.
Delhi Police will now have accident investigation cells in every district. Officers, especially trained for this job, will investigate all the fatal accidents in their areas.
As part of a pilot project, such cells have already started in East, Northwest and South districts of the city.
"The project is still at an early stage, but we will fine tune it in the days to come," said
YS Dadwal, Delhi commissioner of police.
A senior officer not authorized to talk to the media said officers would be trained to collect evidence and reconstruct accidents. “They would also have special software to go through car registration number plates, check tyre marks of vehicles and match them with possible make of the car.”
The police said the formation of the cell would also help in reducing workload on the local police. “After the police control room van responds to a fatal accident, the accident investigation cell would be informed,” said the officer. “The local police would then handover the case to them and they would start their investigations.”
The pilot project, which is at a preliminary stage, has been started in three districts. The police will study the working of the cell in these three places and fine-tune it accordingly. “Right now, the cell has one inspector-level officer and four to five junior officers and other supporting staff in every district,” said the officer. “We will assess what more is required in the coming days.”
The police also believe that having a separate cell for fatal accidents will help the conviction rate in the cases.
