In one of the winding alleys of south Delhi, a group of eunuchs can be seen going door to door, discussing change and betterment.
For Samajwadi Party candidate from Sangam Vihar, Rehana Begum, unstinting support has come in the form of this group championing her case.
While an ordinary campaign trail comprises young and sloganeering party workers, this one has this group of eunuchs led by Anita combing through the interiors of Sangam Vihar on foot.
Anita herself had political ambitions for this year's MCD polls. But she has buried the hatchet and is determined to get Rehana to win the poll. “I am going to do whatever it takes to make Rehana win. I may not be contesting the polls, but my goal is upliftment of the area. I am sure she can tackle all the problems of this area,” she said.
Inspired by Akhilesh Yadav and his party’s landslide victory in the Uttar Pradesh polls, Anita and her group decided to join hands with Rehana Begum. Their agenda is simple — regular water supply, smooth garbage collection and construction of a proper building for an MCD school in the area.
“Though this is the first time that SP is contesting the MCD polls, we are confident of victory. Akhileshji’s win in UP drove us to contest from here and we have his full support,” Anita added.
They have kept their appeal simple — ‘vote for the cycle’. Yet what they claim works in their favour, is their thorough knowledge of the demography of the area .
“I have lived in this area all my life. The candidates of some of the leading parties are not aware of the people’s problems and the extent of development work
required here. I know what every person here expects of me and that will give me an edge over the rest of them,” said Rehana.
