In Ghaziabad, wedding preparations have taken on a new perspective. Apart from matching the horoscopes, parents of the brides are now filing RTI applications with the police to find out if the prospective groom has any kind of criminal background.

Senior police officials said that so far around a dozen such RTI queries had been filed over the past couple of months where people, specially women, had wanted to find out if their potential partner had any criminal record.

“We provided them the information and have kept their identities secret as per their request,” SSP Raghubir Lal said.

He said all the RTI queries received so far were related to district’s rural areas and were answered. “We did not find any crime records against the men about whom the RTIs had been filed,” Lal said.

When an applicant files an RTI, the application is sent to the district crime records bureau (DCRB). The bureau then seeks criminal records from all the police stations in the districts.

“We check history sheets, criminals with rewards on their heads and wanted criminals, too. Also, we check the crime case related information in our crime record note book,” he said.
