A 39-year-old NRI, originally hailing from Rohtak, was booked on charges of raping a 42-year-old widow after marrying her illegally and then fleeing to California abandoning her in January last.

According to the complainant, the accused, who is a married man settled in the US, had convinced the victim that he was a divorcee and married her. After the marriage, he stayed at her Gurgaon residence for four days in January.

Sushant Lok police station has registered a case after a medical examination of the woman confirmed rape. The victim claimed in her FIR that Deepak Kharab fled after establishing sexual relationship with her during the short period after their marriage.

Police have also booked the parents of the accused on charges of criminal breach of trust. The woman, who lives at a rented accommodation in Gurgaon with her two children, had met Kharab through a common acquaintance last year. The two became familiar in subsequent meetings and their association eventually ended in marriage.

"The victim alleged that her in-laws were also aware of their relationship and they got the couple married in a traditional way. Also, the accused and his parents hid the fact that he was already married and hadn't been divorced from his wife," said Maheshwar Dayal, joint commissioner of police, Gurgaon.

According to Dayal, family members of the accused have claimed that they were unaware of the fact that their son had already married the victim.
