A little less than a hundred juveniles were apprehended for their alleged involvement in criminal acts ranging from murder to dacoity this year. Half of them, shockingly, were booked for sexual assault, including unnatural sex.

According to informal Delhi police estimates, the number of juvenile delinquents nabbed till December 15 this year went up from last year’s monthly average of five to eight.

“In 2011, between 50 and 75 juveniles were apprehended. But this year the figure — even before the brutal gangrape in which a 17-year-old was involved was reported — stood at 96 juveniles apprehended for various crimes,” said an officer.

Apart from rape for which 40 juveniles were apprehended, police estimates put the number of juvenile delinquents allegedly having executed 16 cases of murder, 10 were found involved in robberies, nine partook in snatching cases and the involvement two each was ascertained in instances of dacoity and cheating.

On February 10, a class 8 student of a government school was abducted and gangraped by three people, including a juvenile, in east Delhi's Jyoti Nagar. Just 18 days later, three juveniles were nabbed for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl at Badarpur.

On December 12, a juvenile was among four to have been apprehended for repeatedly stabbing a businessman as punishment for inadvertently brushing his shoulder against a local goon’s in Nizamuddin. “What is most alarming is that juveniles are increasingly not only being found to be involved in cases of sexual assault, many are now turning towards unnatural sex,” said the officer.
