A 22-year-old nurse committed suicide at her residence in sector 17, Gurgaon on Sunday evening.
The parents of the girl, who had recently married, alleged dowry harassment by her husband, Dr Manoj Saini.
Saini is employed as a doctor at ESI hospital in Delhi.
A case of death due to dowry harassment has been registered at the sector-18 police station against him.
"Sarita, a native of Rewari, got married to Saini in July this year. It was a love marriage and against the wishes of Sarita's family," said a senior police officer.
"Later, however, when Sarita's family members reconciled to the marriage, Saini began demanding dowry from her," the officer added.
"Hours before committing suicide, Sarita had called up her father to inform him that Dr Saini was harassing her," said a senior police officer.
The police said both Saini and Sarita used to work at the same hospital in Rewari.
"After getting married, while Sarita left her job, Saini joined the ESI hospital. They then shifted to a rented accommodation in sector 17, Gurgaon," he added.
Sarita hanged herself from a ceiling fan on Sunday evening.
No suicide note was found near her body.
However, the police have registered a case of dowry death against Saini, based on the statement of Sarita's father.
No arrests have been made in the case so far.
Further investigations are on. Sarita's body has been sent for post-mortem examination.
