A 45-year-old nurse working at Lok Nayak Hospital in Delhi was found murdered. Her body was found in a semi-nude condition in the bathroom at the hospital’s staff quarters located near Delhi Gate in central Delhi on Saturday night. This is the second murder of a nurse in the hospital’s premises in the past one year.

Police suspect that the nurse was first strangled using a rope and then her head was submerged in a plastic water tub to ensure her death.

Investigators said they have reasons to believe that the killer was known to the woman as entry into the flat on the second floor of the staff quarters was friendly. Even as they are waiting for the deceased’s autopsy report, the police do not suspect sexual assault angle.

The nurse would visit her maternal home every Saturday and would generally reach there by 5 pm, her brother told police. However, when she failed to turn up by the scheduled time and did not even respond to phone calls, her brother rushed to her residence in Delhi only to find the door latched from outside.

“I opened the door and went inside only to find my sister lying dead in the bathroom. Her head was submerged in a tub which she generally used for doing the laundry,” said the brother adding he also found a water-filled bucket placed strategically over her head, which he feels was done to keep the head submerged inside the tub.

The brother informed the police and her body was sent to Maulana Azad Medical College mortuary for autopsy.

The nurse lived alone in the staff quarters after she informally separated from her husband some years ago as he would allegedly harass her for dowry. The couple was having a legal battle over the issue of securing the custody of their 14-year-old son who is presently living with him.

While her family members claimed that some jewellery, cash and property documents were missing from the residence, police said they are yet to ascertain if a robbery led to the murder.

A case of murder was registered at IP Estate police station and it is being probed from all angles. No suspects were identified and no motive behind the murder established till late Sunday evening. Her relatives, husband and his family members and acquaintances are being questioned, investigators said.
