It seems the MCD's image is deterring other agencies from awarding them work. The Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (OC) had earlier asked the agency to put wall wraps on some buildings, flyovers, streetlight poles, and to create temporary archways to give the city an aesthetic look as well as to create a buzz for the Games.
However, with barely 41 days to go, the OC, fearing that the MCD may not meet the deadline and that the quality of work may not be up to mark, has decided to get the work done on its own.
"We were asked by the OC to put up wall wraps and we had sent a presentation, too. However, at a recent meeting, the OC told us they will do the work on their own as they know where the tourists and athletes will be staying. So they'll be able to do the work in a better manner," said a senior MCD official.
However, the legislative wing of the civic agency is claiming that they will not be doing this work as they have not been provided funds for it.
"We were supposed to be given R7 crore to execute the project. But that has not been done till date. So we will not be doing it," said Yogender Chandolia, chairman, MCD standing committee. MCD had identified a number of buildings, flyovers, subways, where these wraps were to be put up. As the gates which were to be constructed on the border areas before the Games have not even begun, temporary arch gates were to be created too.
