If you are an Olympic fan in the city and want to give a message to your favourite player, here’s your chance. A group of three IIT (Delhi) graduates have created a community on a social networking site where fans can key in a message for their favourite athlete with their name and picture. The picture of the fans will then be used to create a mosaic of the player and printed on a T-shirt to be gifted to the players.
The group will be sending a mosaic T-shirt to all 122 players and their coaches who represented India in the Olympics this year. “We want to salute their spirit. Watching the Olympics this year made me really excited about the less popular sports like archery, boxing, swimming and table tennis in India,” says Mayank Bhangadia, 29, founder of the group. “Except for cricket, no other sport is given much recognition in India. The players have to struggle really hard,” says Avinash Saxena, 28, co-founder.
In this endeavour, the trio is being supported by students and friends from other fields.
Praveen Singh, 21, is excited about sending a message to badminton player, Saina Nehwal. “I always wished to tell her that I admire her courage to take up an off-beat sport. Now I can send her my personalised message and picture,” he says. While there will be a mosaic of the player in front, the reverse side of the T-shirt will have thumbnail pictures of the fans and a scroll of the messages by fans.
The group is working closely with the Indian Olympic Association to get the fittings of the players and will be sending them the T-shirts on August 31. “We might also meet bronze medalist Mary Kom to congratulate her for her win at the Olympics this year. Her victory has given a new-found strength to Indian women to be experimental and try a new sport,” says Pranidhi Prabhat, 28, Management consultant.
