On Tuesday, line 2 of the Delhi Metro (Central Secretariat-Jahangirpuri) suffered a major technical snag which affected Metro connectivity for nearly two hours.
On the occasion of Raksha Bandhan on Tuesday, Delhi Metro had said it would run additional trains to help people avoid traffic congestions and to help them save time.
Metro services remained affected on Line 2 from 11.32 am to 01.11 pm when the pantograph (which draws power from the Overhead Electrification or OHE Line) of a train approaching Rajiv Chowk station developed a snag.
“Our technicians tried to repair the fault, but couldn’t. Finally, the train was removed from services at 01.11 pm with the help of another train and passengers were deboarded,” said Anuj Dayal, DMRC spokesperson.
“During this period, trains were run in short loop between Jahangirpuri and Kashmere Gate,” Dayal said.
Many passengers who were in the train suffocated due to inadequate ventilation.
“We were stuck in the train and crying for help, but to no avail. We heaved a sigh of relief when the doors opened after about two hours and we could deboard. Many people including children and the elders were facing breathing problems,” said Renu Garg, who works in an MNC who was going to Rajiv Chowk from Civil Lines.
However, DMRC officials said most of the ACs were functional and to maintain ventilation they had supplied air inside the train from outside.
Line 2 is one of the busiest metro routes where metro runs at three minutes intervals during peak hours. Tuesday being Raksha Bandhan, there were higher footfalls at Metro stations on this line. The technical problem kept hundreds of commuters stranded at each station.
