Till Wednesday, 44-year-old Fakrul Islam was living a content life till his past caught up with him. He ran a chicken biryani shop in Lalita Park in Laxmi Nagar, East Delhi. Married twice, he was living happily with his second wife and two children. But all good things come to an end. And so it did for Fakrul.

On Wednesday, West Delhi Police caught him for the crimes he had committed 27 years ago.

In 1993, Fakrul allegedly jumped parole and had been on the run since then. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Sharad Aggarwal said, “He was a resident of Gomtipur, Ahmedabad, Gujarat and had studied till Class seven. In January 1988, his neighbour Mohammed Aslam got into a heated argument with his mother and aunt. Fakrul, along with his younger brothers, asked and warned Aslam not to use filthy language, but the latter did not heed them. When Aslam continued his argument, Fakrul and his brothers stabbed him to death.”

He added that Islam’s brother Nazrul was acquitted as he was a minor. Badrul Islam, Fakrul’s second brother, was convicted for two years, while Fakrul himself was sentenced for four years.

The state government filed a revision petition and Fakrul’s punishment was converted to a life sentence.

“During his tenure in jail and being very young, he became frustrated and was planning to escape from Jail. He came out from jail on parole in 1993 for seven days and never returned,” added Aggarwal. Fakrul, who had been living in a rented accommodation in Bhagirathi Vihar of the city, was caught yesterday from the entry gate of Uttam Nagar Bus Terminal.

The police said he was initially hiding in Mumbai and had later shifted his base to Delhi. He, along with his family, started living in Jafarabad, North East Delhi. During this period, he got married and later divorced his first wife. Then he again remarried and has two children.
