East Delhi is probably one of the few areas in the city, which has the lowest number of surface parking lots and where plans for multi-level parking lots are not even under consideration. As far as surface parking lots are concerned only 40 lots are running so far, though the civic agency is trying to increase it to 100 by year end.
While in south, west and north Delhi, civic agency has been constructing multi-level parking lots but not a single one is being constructed in east Delhi.
“A few plans were made in the past but they never materialised. We had planned to make four underground parking lots in Mayur Vihar, Krishna Nagar, Dilshad Garden and others underneath the parks. But we were denied permission from Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA). They have now asked us to look at other vacant plots for constructing a parking lot,” said JS Yadav, commissioner of East Delhi Municipal Corporation. “We are planning to construct multi-level parking lots in Vivek Vihar and Laxmi Nagar which will ease some of the problems,” added Yadav.
