Whatever relief the late rains brought to Delhi has been eroded by the steep power bills that consumers are now receiving for the June-July cycle — a time when the city was reeling under 8-10 hours of power cuts.

“How can they say I consumed more power, when on most days during those months I suffered power cuts for up to 10 hours?” said Rajiv Kakria, vice-president of GK-I residents’ welfare association.

Through June and a part of July, the city experienced its worst “power crisis” in seven years. HT had reported that during the ‘crisis’ period, distribution companies had not bought enough power to tide over the shortfall. See graphic

Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission, after a month-long probe, confirmed as much and issued a show-cause notice to power distributor BSES.

Quite bizarrely, BSES had then maintained that it had actually supplied Delhiites more electricity than in the same period last summer — an exceptionally cool time.

Justifying the bills, Arun Kanchan, BSES CEO, said that during the prolonged hot weather this year, compressor-based appliances (ACs and refrigerators) consumed more power.

“We can look into individual cases, but people have genuinely consumed more power during the past months,” he told HT. “People should also see if part of the previous month’s usage is included in this month’s bill.”

But residents are planning to meet the CM over this. “We will first reply to the discoms,” said Pankaj Aggarwal, general secretary of RWAs’ Joint Front.
