Outgoing Delhi Mayor Dr Kanwar Sain rued the fact that the post, especially in a city like Delhi does not have ‘matching powers.’
He also said the Delhi mayor should get a longer tenure as “by the time one understands work and initiates something new, it is time to go.”
Dr Sain also said, “The Mayor’s term in Uttar Pradesh is five years and in Gujarat, it is three years. It should be the same across the country.”
Dr Sain admitted he could not do all that he promised, including turning Delhi into Singapore vis-à-vis cleanliness.
However, on keeping the city clean, the outgoing mayor said door-to-door garbage collection scheme is already running successfully in six zones.
“Tenders have been floated for the remaining phases and by the end of two months, the same would be carried out in the remaining six zones too.”
CWG, Cobalt-60 and his achievements:
Dr Sain expressed confidence that all municipal work related to the Commonwealth Games would be complete by May-end.
“I am confident that all major works taken up for the CWG would be finished by May-end.”
Reacting to a query about Cobalt 60 found from a scrap dealer, he said, “The corporation should keep a check while giving out licenses and strictly follow all rules.”
Dr Sain listed out completion of the Municipal Council of Delhi (MCD) civic centre, widening of tax net, higher property tax collection and increased parking revenue among his other achievements.
