Delhi government on Wednesday told Delhi High Court that it has formed a high-level committee to find ways to regulate the functioning of placement agencies in the Capital.
This assumes importance in the wake of complaints that many such agencies are trafficking in maids.
Government counsel Mukta Gupta said committee consisted of the secretary in the law, home and social welfare department and members of Delhi Commission of Women.
A bench headed by Chief Justice A.P. Shah, while welcoming the move, said there was need for inter-state communication as 80 per cent of the maids were from other states like Bengal and Bihar. “It is very surprising that despite the problem being so acute there is no inter-state coordination”, the court observed.
