Panic struck Jamia Nagar once again when a parcel bomb exploded in the area on Monday. The bomb, wrapped as a gift, was delivered to the Shaheen Bagh house of a manpower consultant and contractor Mohammed Uzair (45).

The man who had delivered the parcel (a red box) fled immediately after delivering the package. Uzair’s five children and his wife Golden Uzair were present in the house at the time.

“It seems to be a case of personal enmity. We have registered a case of attempt to murder,” said Virendra Singh Chail, additional commissioner of police (southeast).

Uzair was seriously injured and was rushed to Holy Family Hospital

What happened

On Monday, around 3:30 pm, an unknown person delivered a gift-wrapped parcel to Uzair’s house. The police said the unidentified man knew that Uzair would be in his bedroom at the back of the house.

“The man was carrying a bag and he came to the rear entrance of the house. The victim’s accountant Mohammed Riyaz was sitting in an under-construction building. The man came and said he had come from Laxmi Nagar on behalf of the victim’s brother-in-law who lives in Saudi Arabia to deliver a gift,” said Shahbad Akram, Uzair’s brother-in-law.

The man then gave the package to Riyaz who knocked on the victim’s door and called him out and handed him the package. The bomb detonated when Uzair opened the package while he was still standing at the door.

“There was a blast. When we reached the room, we saw Uzair lying on the floor. He was grievously injured,” said Abaad Khan, a neighbour.

The blast left the family so shaken that they locked themselves up in their house for more than four hours and refused to let in even the police or forensic officials.

“They are scared. We have been trying to convince them that everything is fine,” said Mohammed Asghar, a neighbour of the victim. Finally it was their eldest son Shamsu (16) who coaxed his mother to let them inside.

According to the family, it was a small shoebox-sized package wrapped in red paper. “My father took the package as the man said it was from my uncle Asad Ashri who lives in Saudi,” said Shamsu. The police was called and Uzair was taken to Holy Family Hospital and later referred to AIIMS Trauma Center.

Forensic testing:

The police said they are still unsure of the composition of the bomb. The forensic team has collected evidence from the spot and sent them to the lab.

The police said that they have registered a case of attempt to murder and Explosives Act in matter.
