For nearly two months now, Vijay (39) has had only one thing on his mind— water. Simply due to lack of regular water supply.

A resident of Sector 14, Pocket B, Dwarka, he says, “Everyday is frustrating. One can live without electricity, but not without water,” he says.

Vijay has met various officials to get the problem solved. “I wrote to and met the engineers responsible, but to no avail,” he adds. “With no water to drink we can’t think of using the coolers,” he says. “Daily, we buy water worth Rs 200,” he added.

In Dwarka, DDA is responsible for water supply. “Chief engineer, S.R. Solanki assured us that the problem would be solved. But nothing has happened,” says K.K. Pathak, 72, a Sector-14 resident .

When asked, Solanki said, “There is a water shortage as the Delhi Jal Board is not able to provide us with the required amount of water.”

DJB, however, denied any water shortage. “The area’s biggest problem is water theft. The Dwarka line is a long one and illegal tapping is persistent at more than 70 places. We need police help to tackle this menace,” said R.K. Garg, member, water works, DJB.

Water availability has been a persistent problem in Dwarka, with some areas getting water once every three days.

But it is not only Dwarka that is suffering. Mehrauli too has been getting erratic water supply for the last one month.

“Today is the seventh day that we have gone without water. We have to buy water from private tankers for Rs 200 to Rs 300. Even after that carrying water up to the third floor is a difficult task,” said Ruksana Choudhary, a resident of Mehrauli.

DJB also admitted that Mehrauli is a problem area. “Summers do pose problems in Mehrauli. There was a problem with the water plant yesterday and the water supply had to be cut off,” Garg added.
