For Narendra Pal (name changed), father of the nine-year-old girl who was molested by her teacher in Srinivaspuri, even the thought of sending his daughter back to school sends shivers down his spine. “She is in a state of shock and we are not sure if we should push her to go to the same school,” he said.

Unfortunately, Pal does not have too many options but to send his daughter to the same school, as there are no other government schools in the area.

“My son also goes to the same school and so do all other children in the neighbourhood,” said Pal, who is a doctor by profession. He runs a small clinic in Jaitpur.

Other parents from the area, too, echoed Pal’s fears. “We send our children to school thinking they will be safe there. If teachers start behaving like this, who do we trust our kids with?” said Sarita Devi, a resident of Srinivaspuri, whose children also go to the same school.

“My daughter is in Class 5 in the same school. I am little worried about sending her there after this incident,” said Omvati Devi, mother of a 10-year-old.

Principal of the school, KS Burfal, said the accused was appointed in July this year as guest teacher. Burfal said he was not present in school on Saturday, when the incident occurred. “I was out on census duty and came to know about the incident only on Monday.”
