Parliament on Wednesday mourned the death of over 100 people in a boat tragedy in Brahmaputra river in Assam's Dhubri district.

As soon as the Lok Sabha met for the day, Speaker Meira Kumar made obituary reference to the victims of the boat tragedy that happened on Monday.

She also made reference to a road accident on Sunday in which 20 persons were killed in Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.

She then made reference to death of 33 people in different parts of Andhra Pradesh and Howrah district of West Bengal on April 29 in lightning strikes.

Kumar also offered tributes to victims of tornado and rain and hail storm in several parts of Tripura in the last five days.

"The House expresses its profound sorrow on these tragedies which have brought pain and suffering to the families of the bereaved and injured," she said.

When the Rajya Sabha met in the morning, Chairman Hamid Ansari referred to boat tragedy in Assam.

He said over 100 people were reported to have drowned and around 150 were still missing.

The loss of so many lives is indeed tragic, he said.

Members in both the Houses later stood in silence as a mark of respect to the departed souls.
