A part of pedestrian bridge on outer ring road near Pamposh Enclave adjoining Greater Kailash-I collapsed on Sunday night after it was hit by a speeding truck.
The bridge was constructed and is maintained by the Public Works Department (PWD).
According to officials, around 11.15 pm, a speeding truck, which was overloaded with goods, crashed into a part of the bridge.
Pedestrians will not be allowed to use the bridge for at least 25 days, till it is completely restored. People will have to face difficulty in crossing the busy stretch.
"Under the impact of the collision, part of the pedestrian bridge was dislodged, kept hanging in the air and suddenly collapsed. One bystander was injured too. We removed the deck as it was hanging and we will have to carry out welding. It will be repaired in a few days," said a senior PWD official.
This pedestrian bridge is located on a busy stretch and a number of vehicles pass beneath it during peak hours between Nehru Place and Chirag Dilli.
However, there was negligible traffic on Sunday night when the incident took place.Officials said that though a height barrier was in place to ensure vehicles exceeding the limit do not try to cross it but the truck driver ignored the warning and crashed right into it.
"There was a height barrier in place to ensure vehicles don't crash into it but the truck was overloaded due to which it exceeded the limit," added the official.
Traffic police, which are supposed to prosecute overloaded vehicles, turned a blind eye to the truck. Joint commissioner of police (traffic) Satyendra Garg could not be reached for comment.
