Dog owners in the city need not run from pillar to post to say a dignified final goodbye to their beloved pets in the city anymore.

In what will come as a relief to many animal lovers, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has proposed to construct a canine cremation ground at Mukundpur in the revised budget estimates for 2010-2011 and the budget estimates for 2011-2012 on Wednesday.

The cremation ground will be part of the proposed 27 acre veterinary hub to be built at Mukundpur.

The veterinary hub will also house dog sterilization centres and a dispensary for animals.

The hub will come up on an area which has recently been freed from encroachers, said Municipal Commissioner KS Mehra.

“We have appealed to the Delhi government to include this project in 2011-12 annual plan," Mehra said.

The hub will also house horse pounds and pig pounds, facilities where stray animals will be put.

"We have also planned to construct a pig slaughter house, which is no where in the city till date," said a senior MCD

There will be 10 dog sterilization centres in the complex. The project is currently in the planning stage.

“Our Engineering Department officials are working to give shape to the project. The budget allocation for the project has not been decided so far,” the official added.
