A plea for replacing the Mullaperiyar dam, which is in a precarious condition and “posing a danger” to the people in parts of Kerala, was made in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
Raising the issue in Zero Hour, P T Thomas (Congress) said that the dam, built way back in 1885, has been hanging like a “sword of Damocles” over the people of Kerala.
Demanding that a new-generation dam be built in its place, he wanted the Prime Minister to convene a high-level meeting of concerned parties. At the same time, he made it clear that Kerala was not against sharing water from the dam with Tamil Nadu.
The issue appeared to have agitated members from Tamil Nadu with several of them, especially those from the AIADMK including M Thambidurai, up on their feet, but what they said could not be heard in the din.
