PM's wife joins walk to create awareness about cancer

delhi Updated: Feb 16, 2009 04:49 IST

Wife of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Gursharan Kaur, together with US Ambassador David C Mulford and his wife and CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat, designer Ritu Kumar and thousands of others participated in a walk in New Delhi on Sunday to create awareness about early detection of cancer.

"Cancer detected in early stages can be cured and cancer patients need the emotional support of their friend and family in the fight against it," Kaur said while flagging off the 'Walk for Life' organised by CanSupport.

Kaur, who took out time for a good cause despite her husband Prime Minister Manmohan Singh still convalescing after undergoing coronary by-pass surgery recently, said that she would be happy to be associated with spreading awareness about the ever-present and growing threat of cancer in India and the need to face the challenge.

Speaking on the occasion, Mulford said "it is important to create awareness about cancer and its detection in early stages helps in its cure."

Mulford's wife J Mulford had also suffered from breast cancer and was cured after a treatment regime at a New York Hospital.

Mulford stressed on the need for support from the family to cancer patients and said, "it is important as it helps them to fight it."
